University of St. Thomas recently launched the Master of Arts in Digital Media and Emergent Technology (DMET), a pioneering graduate program preparing students for dynamic careers.
In January 2024, University of St. Thomas welcomed the inaugural “Luminary Cohort” of the Digital Media and Emergent Technology graduate program. These students, including UST alumni Oscar Bayo, Dr. Brandon Green, and Giovanna Ramirez, bring with them diverse backgrounds and experiences, reflecting the program’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and accessibility in higher education.
The MA in Digital Media and Emergent Technology innovation is part of a broader push by UST President, Dr. Richard Ludwick, to infuse forward-looking technology skills into the traditional Liberal Arts and Catholic higher education.
Created and led by Dr. Cesare Wright, the DMET program focuses on ethics, integrity, and social good while exploring cutting-edge fields like virtual engagement, AI, and digital media production.
Digital Media Initiatives - UST Leading the Future!
The new graduate degree builds on the success of Dr. Wright’s innovative Digital Media Initiatives and courses, including the Unmuted Human Trafficking podcast project, which has garnered national media attention.
Dr. Wright’s extensive experience in media, technology, and education includes co-developing the Engineering Leadership program at Rice University and creating a variety of STEM education programs for Microsoft, BP, Intel, Chevron, and other industry partners.
The DMET program integrates curriculum developed by the Kino-Eye Center for the Microsoft EPIC, FAST, and VIP programs, including coursework in AI, AR/VR, Metaverse, and Virtual Engagement.
Wright describes DMET as “one of the most relevant, rigorous, and cost-effective graduate programs of its kind,” offering a “strong revenue stream for the university during a time of transition and uncertainty in higher education.”
Catholic Tradition and the Future of Work
The MA program in Digital Media and Emergent Technology blends theory, research, and practical experience, preparing students for diverse career paths in digital media production, journalism, marketing, technical consulting, policy, business, and more.
Rooted in the Catholic tradition of “intellectual charity,” the program emphasizes ethical technology use and industry collaboration, while enhancing students’ real-world experience and helping them to build a professional network.
“The DMET program positions UST as a leader in Catholic higher education by preparing graduates for success in the ever-evolving digital media and technology landscape,” Wright said.
